Installed in December 2001 this 2.5m diameter mosaic was designed by Gary for a new development at Astoria Court in Purley, Surrey. The mosaic commemorates the opening of the Astoria Cinema but is also about the cinema and our relationship to cinema and film stars.

The mosaic depicts an audience watching Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in a scene form "It happened one night" which was the big film in the year the Astoria Cinema opened.

The contrast between the audience and the film is enhance by the use of different mosaic styles. The audience are made in the traditional vermiculatum style while the film is depicted using the palladianum style flecked with pieces of shining glass.
