mosaic maker and mural artist Gary Drostle

"...creativity is combined with a thoroughly professional and practical approach so that issues of integration into architecture, working with other professionals, long-term maintenance and community contact are all addressed."

The works, Site Specific Art

de-mystifying the labels

Gary Drostle has been creating works of art professionally for over twenty years, during which time it has been given various labels including site specific art, community art, public art, architectural art, landscape art, street art, folk art, craftwork, mural art and mosaic art.

These labels change and blend according to the current fashion but the core elements of Gary's work remain the same.

Bedford Medieval Map Mosaic, Bedford Castle Park.

art created to commission

All of Gary's work is created solely to commission, each work tailor made for the individual client. In fact this is the only way to create such site specific work, the site must come first and the considerations of the site must be taken into account and inform the design. This is not 'off the peg' gallery art, but the finest quality, bespoke artworks that have the power to transform an empty site into a landmark.

art which is linked to it's environment

Because your commission is created specifically for your site it can be uniquely linked into the site. This means that a whole range of external factors can influence the final design including the surrounding landscape and architecture, the shapes and types of materials used in the area, the history of the local area both hidden and visible, your stories, even local colours.

art which recognises it's community

All of Gary's works begin with listening, whether that is to an individual client, a local authority, architects or contractors, the commission starts with you. Gary also recognises the importance of local communities in the siting of public commissions and can undertake a range of initiatives to involve and consult local people from addressing public meetings, running workshops in schools and holding project related events.

Gary specialises in the classic techniques of the architectural artists of the past, mural painting, mosaic and sculpture, to find out more about these techniques click here.
