This new triptych of mosaics for the Coronation Estate in Weston super Mare was inspired by the fauna and flora reflected in the local Rhynes. A Rhyne is the local name given to the ancient waterways dug around the area to drain the former marshes, like all waterways they are a sanctuary for wildlife. The three floor mosaics are sited at the Loxton Road shopping parade. "I am very excited about this work" says Gary "trying to depict a sense of the local area through the reflections of nature and wildlife in the waters surface is a real challenge and an exciting development on my earlier work depicting water in mosaic." The response from the local community has been very positive, with plenty of praise from all sectors of the community, young and old. The response was best summarised by the typical Somerset phrase "fair play to ya!"

***INSPIRATION*** Gary recently returned from teaching at the annual convention of the Society of American Mosaic Makers, this year held in San Diego. As usual the week was full of mosaic inspiration with mosaic artists from across the US and abroad and the International Mosaic Arts exhibition held at the Museum of Man in San Diego and featuring one of Gary's works in the architectural section. The week included a visit to 'Queen Califa's Magic Circle' the gigantic park mosaic garden, Niki De Saint Phalle's last work before her death. Gary can be seen here with Niki's chief assistant and mosaic artist Lech Juretko.

It was 20 YEARS AGO...
'Love Over Gold' was the theme for this community mural in 1989. Painted using the durable Keim Paint System the mural combined work from local school children in Deptford, south east London. Still a favourite the mural can still be seen on the side of the Cockpit Arts Building in Creekside, Deptford, although after 20 years it could do with a clean and freshen up... hint hint Lewisham Council!
