This community mosaic involving Chingford Hall Primary School and the local youth club began by looking at the guardians that stand at the gates of so many ancient monuments. This was the inspiration for new guardians for the gateway onto the Chingford Hall Estate in North London.

Above you can see one of the pair that were made to flank the gateway. Design workshops in the school and youth club began the process, Gary took one of the children's designs and transformed it into the central dragons, then using more of the designs created the border of guardian creatures. These borders were made entirely by the children using vitreous ceramic tesserae, while the central panels were made in the studio.
